I have an E6410 that's still going strong. I recently put Windows 8 on it, and aside from a not-so-minor issue with the GPU crashing any time I come out of standby or hibernate, I really would like a higher resolution display. Windows 8 is much happier at 1080p.

I've done an aftermarket display upgrade in an old iBook before, but that was before laptop LCDs stopped using LVDS cabling, and I'm not really all that familiar with the modern I/O that laptop LCDs use now. Has anyone done an aftermarket upgrade in an E6400 or E6410 and lived to tell about it? I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

btw there is a fix for that display driver crash. the issue is with timing values coming off idle. its worse in the higher octane radeon devices [but its not the gpu/driver fault, the fault is with the windows registry values]. one can either hack the registry, or create a Profile for each device [i.e. your onboard display, and your external /dock/hdtv, etc]. make a profile but don't apply it, edit the profile to increase the clock cycles, then restart and apply the values.
its pretty easy on a radeon / catalyst device

You can upgrade from the 1280 x 200 panels to the 1440 x 900 panels, but I don't even think there exists a 1080p panel that would physically fit the E6400/E6410, even before any electrical shenanigans.

FWIW I am running W8 (not 8.1) on my E6510 (sibling to your E6410) also with an NVIDIA 3100M. I let Windows update pick the driver for me and have not had any BSOD ever *knock on wood*

I did try installing the latest WHQL driver from NVIDIA however that did not work out well for me. I reverted back to the driver that Windows update choose for me and it is running smoothly and glitch-free for the most part.

I'm not entirely sure if I can do that easily with NVIDIA's drivers, but I did just finish installing a slightly older driver from September 2013, and it fixed the black screen issue.

Well, there are definitely 14" LCDs that are 1080p; I'm just not sure if newer LCDs use a universal physical connector like old LVDS ones did. I'll have to do some more research, it sounds like.

My E6410 was configured with the 1440x900 display already. :)

    Yes, but I'm 99% sure not 16:10.

Yeah...I am VERY bummed to find out that there don't appear to be any 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 14.1" LCDs. It's kind of ridiculous, given that there are 13" LCDs for laptops today with four times the pixel density.

I'm going to keep looking...I'd be okay with 1680x1050 if I can find it.
