There are some good deals on 16GB combos (2x8GB) sticks, and I'm wondering if the E6410 supports the combination.

Or is it limited to 4GB SDRAM modules?

What processor is installed? First gen core i typically doesn't support 16GB RAM but SB and IB for sure do

Unfortunately, the CPU only supports 8GB so you're right.

I think you need a quad core i7 to get 8 GB RAM support, my W860CU max is 8 GB, but with Clarksfield i7 (I have a 720QM) it supports 16 GB.

Tsunade, that was exactly what I was searching for. My old M17 R2 i7 920xm worked 16GB off support, but my latitude with i5 refuses to boot windows on 8gb sticks. Now I know the reason!
