    Hi,

I need your help guys, my E6400 simply won't start. CPU is overheating in first 3sec. , tried another CPU (T series), same crap. It's the only apparent symptom.

As soon as I plug in the charger, it powers itself on for 3sec., fan boosts on "red-line" and reboots over and over until CPU is "burning". Then it shuts down. between reboots I hear a "clack" relay like sound.
On battery, when powered on, same 3sec. thing, but doesn't reboot, shuts down.

I got it to only boot/work once today, still don't know how, and the fan didn't even turned on, CPU didn't overheated, everything fine, made an hardware test, accused inverted not detected  but the screen was fine. After I turned it off, went back to the same.

    Thanks.

I don't think it is overheating. There's probably just some random board level component that's on its last legs. I've seen something similar on a bad E6500 board. Try to start it with as few components installed as possible. Else, a replacement E6400 motherboard is like $60 on eBay.

    Hi,

Yeah, i also read here a similar thread, but mine as no lights on/blinking, except for for battery blinking when charging, and power light between reboots.

A refurbished board is something i was really trying to avoid.. Already had a really bad experience with a dv9000, and I wouldn't like to repeat it.

Regarding that 6500, do you remember what component was out?

    Thanks.

I had the board replaced under warranty. Unless you are really pro, you are not going to find the component.

There is honestly nothing wrong with buying a used board. Personally, I would attribute your poor past experience to the fact that it was a DV9000, not to the fact that the board was a refurb ;)

I'm a pro, just not freakin' Merlin.. lol
I have a good set of tools and some measurement instruments, but to find anything within 3sec... Measuring a disconnected board is simply impossible. You see my dilemma?
Problem with a used board is I'm from Portugal, Europe. If the board has any problems, it will cost me 3x more just in shipping fees.

    Thanks.
