    Hey guys,
I just received an E6400 at my work with the Nvidia NVS 160M card. My Vista Aero score is 3.4, but to me just normal windows operations seem sluggish and jerky. I've had a Vista box with integrated graphics that handle simple Aero transitions much better. I've gotten the latest Dell supported nvidia driver and it has had no effect. Has anyone else had this problem and if so do you have any advice?
    Thanks so much,
    Adrian

Just to update with some interesting info....once plugged into the docking station this does not seem to be a problem on the external monitors, only on the laptop screen.

Bump. Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution? I've seen others have this problem but no clear cut solution.
    Thanks,
    Adrian

Uninstall the GPU drivers, and reinstall them. Or, update to a newer version of the drivers from either Nvidia/Laptopvideo2go.com

Thanks I tried that to no avail. I am now back to the dell recommended nvidia drivers. It seems bizarre to me that once on the docking station and going through external monitors there are no problems, but on the laptop LCD itself is where the lag occurs.

Did your work receive similar units that work ok? Did your work install stuff before you got the machine? Are you running the OEM OS install or a special work-imaged OS install? Does the problem persist when running the plain OS vga driver? Have you booted safe-mode to see if the problem persists?

Good questions GK. We didn't receive any other E6400's but we did receive an E6500 that is running smoothly, although I think the Nvidia card has a different kind of ram in that one. I am running the OEM OS install, no special work images. Regarding the OS vga driver, you're suggesting uninstalling the Nvidia driver altogether?

Perhaps try safe-mode first to save you uninstalling the nVidia driver. I believe safe-mode will use the plain vga driver. But then if the display runs well, you won't know what to suspect since safe-mode dumbs down many things. Next step might be to uninstall just the nVidia driver... although I'm not so sure that's the problem... but then reinstalling it would be a possible next step in troubleshooting.

Also see if you can turn off 'Areo' to see if simplifying the GUI helps give another clue.

Did you notice this problem out-of-box, or after some installations? Also, I wonder if laptop power management functions that throttle performance are in play here?

    How much RAM?

Through the NVIDIA Control Panel (can be accessed by right-clicking on the desktop) I would adjust "Adjust Image Settings with preview" under the "3D settings" on the side.
Also, under "Display" > "Change Resolution" the refresh rate I have set is 60 Hz.
Finally, under (Windows) Control Panel (classic view) > Performance Information and Tools > Adjust visual effects I use the following settings w/o trouble. I find it is the optimal point between looks and performance (both are important to me).

This driver seemed to fix lag problems for me. Had to use the custom INF in Vista 32. These drivers are unsigned which is a serious pain in vista 64.
