e6400 USB ports

    I think I may be an idiot. According to dell, the E6400 has 4 USB 2 ports (1 with powershare) and 1 esata port.

    Using the laptop, 2 of the USB ports are on the right and the one with powershare is on the left side along with the esata port. Where is the 4th USB port?

    Maybe I'm blind. :cool:

    If its anything like the eSATA ports on the Studios, its a combo USB/eSATA port...you can plug USB into the bottom part of the port.

    Maybe the eSATA is actually working on the e6400... The Studios have the eSATA ports but no hardware on the system board for its use...its a dummy port USB only:(

    The eSATA port is also a USB port.

    The E6400 is on the bottom and you can see that the lower USB port has a different shape. This is so that it will take both a USB plug and an eSATA (but not both at the same time).

    Wow. That's kinda *weird*. Seems like the 2 types of ports would either be physically or electrically different. I'll give it a shot though. Thanks everyone!

    Somehow it works. I've used that port for both USB and eSATA. What I have noticed, however, is that it is a little more difficult inserting a USB plug than with the other ports.

    Ditto! Impossible to insert my Cruzer titanium in the eSata/USB combo. Cables pose no major challenges though. That new chipset supports esata well enough as it's working nice. For a 2.5" portable external drive you also have to use a USB port for power though.

    For me one USB port is enough to power up an external 2.5" drive. This is very nive!

    Most recent external USB 2.5" HDDs will run from one port. However, if you use eSATA then you need both the eSATA port (for data) and a USB port (for power). Perhaps someone can make a special adaptor for the eSATA / USB combo port so both the USB power and the eSATA data can be used.
