    Hi,

I am considering the purchase of an E6400 and would like to know if it can be used via the AC adaptor on mains power without the battery being in the machine. This would hopefully prolong battery life over time if it was only placed in the machine when required as a portable PC ?

    Thx

yes.... you can use it without the batt on the laptop
but it won't prolong batt life - if that's your purpose. li-ions do have their own ware and tare even though you're not using it

The E6400 only tops up the battery occasionally if it left plugged into mains power all the time, so the extra wear in minimal.

I always like to have the benefit of the built-in UPS in case there's a power failure.

    Taking the battery out:
    Pro:
Will increase the battery life because of less heat.
Con: You don't have a protection against power failure anymore.

Is extending battery life the reason why you want to take it out?
