I have E6400 with Vista SP1. When I tested hard disk using HDtune, the burst rate is always much lower compared to the transfer rate. I already tried Seagate, WD, Toshiba, they're all the same. But if I look benchmark from other users (they don't use Dell though), the graph is different. Here is what I have:
My graph: the burst rate is always low.
E6400 users, can you test yours and let me know? I just want to make sure that my machine is ok. Thanks.

    55MB/s is unusually low.

What HDD access mode do you have set in the BIOS?

Theres mine. That is with the stock crappy seagate drive that was in it when i bought it. Before that, i ran it with a couple programs open and got 55mb or so...which makes no sense (i thought itd be better when nothing else was running, guess not).

let me know if you figure anything out!

yep, and i use the default mode...i think its IRRT. everything seems really snappy though, i dunno. maybe this is a cause of my occasional stutter?

    kazaam:

no need to worry about this burst rate and so on. your graph looks good. the most important thing is:

    1. average transfer rate (yours is 70MB+), this looks good.
    2. seek time

burst rate really depends on the manufacturer. i install same hard disk in dell, sony, and server for comparison. when installed in dell, i got low burst rate (around 60MB/s), but when install in sony (old one), the burst rate is very high (around 110MB/s+) when i install the hard disk in work station with raid controller, i can get as high as 310MB/s burst rate. Now, you know that there is no way for laptop HDD can have 310MB/s burst rate. During these 3 test settings, other parameters have similar results.

So I conclude burst rate really depends on manufacturer and burst rate is NOT very important at all. I also do some research online and it states the same.

In conclusion, your HDD is ok!!!

As I posted here, HD Tune gives much lower burst rates than HD Tach. The latter's results look more plausible.
