Some time ago a Dell technician came to replace CPU & heatsink. I saw him applying the paste. This came in a chewing-gum like bar. He folded it a couple of times and inserted it between the CPU and heatsink. perhaps he folded it too many times so the surface is too small but too thick. I wish I challenged him more on that now...

really? all the dell technicians i've seen carry a tube of sillicone based paste.

anyway im very happy with my temps now. although, its a pity about the dell bios temperature tables. when the laptop gets cool, it switches off the fan until it heats up a little bit, then it comes on and cools it back down.

i'd rather the fan stayed on low all the time to result in lower temps, as i use my laptop on my lap a lot. but i suppose this will please those who prefer the fan to be off mostly.

There was a Dell guy here just now, replacing mainboard, Heatsink/Fan. The heatsink had a square of of paste on it already. No tube there..

Havent used the system long enough to say if it helped or not, will let you know. The reason they decided to switch was due to that i had high speed fan in bios.
