My fan runs after the lid closes and I put it directly in its case for class. Its in an enclosed area and doesn't get proper ventilation that way.

How can I disable that? It's pretty annoying.

If you've set your machine to standby or hibernate when the lid closes, it's not going into standby or hibernate properly. If you haven't done so, it means the machine is just going to keep running when you close the lid, and subsequently keep running the fan. The fan absolutely should not be running if the machine is off, in standby, or in hibernation.

The PC is set to go to Standby when the lid closes according to the Power Options properties Advanced tab.

I just changed it to Hibernate. On my desktop computer, I believe the fans stay on in Standby...maybe not.

Any other suggestions? Maybe a BIOS setting?

Is Vista/XP even going to standby/hibernate when you close the lid? Are you not sure a program is blocking it? The fans do not stay on in stand-by mode btw as I leave my own on the time in stand-by in a sleeve.

On your desktop the fans will keep running in standby depending on your standby mode(s). There's like power-on standby and like S3 standby (forget the actual names); the former basically keeps everything running. How are you making sure that the machine is properly going into standby when you close the lid?

I never use standby when putting a computer into a bag. There are too many things which can cause it to wake up and then overheat. I always use hibernation and make sure the computer is off before put it into the bag. It may take an extra minute but it is more calamity-proof.
