dang it! I just got my e6400 and the first thing I see when I boot is this stoopid BSOD, "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"

I have vista ultimate. I went into the bios and everything seems ok. I fear a memory problem. I am running the diagnostic tests but I don't have much hope on them.

    can anybody help?

PS: how do you get to the vista installation menu?

There is no recovery partition. There's a partition but nothing useful on it. Inspect the hardware. Loosen the one center screw in the bottom cover and gently slide the cover free to allow you to look for any mis-installed pieces. Reseat the DVD drive and battery, etc. If all looks solid, boot the Dell diagnostic CD and run full diagnostics to bang on the hardware. That will probably run great and convince you the hardware is ok. Then it remains to mess with Windows... boot safe mode, look around, try rebooting normally. Eventually, you may decide to clean install Vista and learn more about your machine than you may want to.

    thanks for the advice.

the thing is that non of the safe modes work. Also in the advanced boot menu, the restore windows option will still take me to the BSOD. I am pretty sure it is a hardware problem. I am gonna try removing one of the two ram sticks, on at a time.

guys! I was on the phone for HOURS! I am not kidding. the problem was a defective DVDRW, I started by disabling all ports and peripherals, and at the end it boiled down that with the optical bay disabled everything would work fine. so I removed the dvd and enabled the bay and everything works.
I tried to remove and put it back in but no luck.
so hopefully this will help someone in the future.
