I have been using a thinkpad t60 for the last few years but I recently purchased the e6400. Lenovo included a handy little piece of software that told you the rate of discharge of your battery --- basically how much power (in mW) the laptop was using at any given moment. Anyone know of any free software out there that will give you the same info on the dell e6400?

I use the battery info page of RMClock. An alternative, if you are running XP, is MobileMeter, which produces a nice graph of discharge (or charge) over time).

BatteryMon will work for 30 days before demanding money.

I have never seen this before, thanks for the post. I installed it and it seems like a useful program and the price (free) is great.

By chance, I found a tool named BatteryBar. It is based on .NET Framework 2.0, should work fine on Vista (haven't tested it myself) and is free.
