E5500 wont play DVD or CD. It was seeing the DVD drive as a CD drive in MY COMPUTER. I went back to a restore point and it now sees the DVD drive as a DVD drive. It plays a split second of DVDs if it sees them at all. This occurs with the drive in the laptop and via an external USB drive.

When you say "external USB drive", are you just putting the internal drive in an enclosure? Otherwise if you're having the same issue the internal drive and a different external drive, I'd say you're probably looking at a software issue. Did playing optical media stop working or did it never work at all?

Well, I've reformatted and reinstalled Win7. I used the internal drive to install 7.
However, now, in My Computer it doesn't show any optical drive. The internal drive is not listed.
If I connect a different DVD drive via USB, it is listed in My Computer and it plays movies.

Does the drive show up in BIOS? Have you tried reseating it?

Under System Information / Fixed Bay Device it lists NONE.

No, I haven't tried to reseat it.

Well, reseat it a couple times, and if it doesn't show up, I would assume it is a bad drive.

Well, A screw holds the drive in place. So, there's no real wiggle room. Never the less, I unscrewed it and made sure it was pushed all the way in. I'm guessing the drive is bad.

I have it set to never go into sleep mode but sometimes, while moving my mouse or other activity, the screen goes blank even though I'm active.
The only way back is to close the lid which puts it in sleep mode and then press the blinking power button to enter a password to enter windows again.

Is the problem the CD drive or the display?

    Both are problematic.
