Performance-wise, there's not much difference. What is important thing is TRIM support, because without it, SSD life will be greatly reduced. I haven't been able to find a clear answer on what allows TRIM to work, but the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver and RAID Mode does cause complications.

Going with AHCI without RST is the safest bet to make sure that TRIM is working (there's no easy way to tell if TRIM is working, you can check if it is enabled, but enabled doesn't mean working if something like RST gets in the way). RST is not required, and neither is RAID Mode.

I have an E6400 with Intel X-25M SSD. By default it was set to IRRT and had a Windows 7 performance index rating of 7.1. After switching to AHCI, the rating jumped to 7.6. In reality it doesn't feel any quicker but maybe trimmed 3 or 4 seconds off the boot time - which is now 17 seconds from powered off.

I've found that not to work on an E6410 and E6320 (only systems I've tried it on), so you may still need to reinstall...

Intel RST 9.6 and newer support TRIM for SSDs when the controller is set to RAID mode but the SSD isn't in a RAID configuration.
