I bought a refurb E4300 about a month ago. I really like the design and really want to keep this laptop, but I've come across some random issues, I've never dealt with before and it's getting to annoy me.

The most recent one is when the computer sits for about 10 min (the setting is set to 10 min) and goes to standby. The blue microsoft screen comes up and the words "Preparing to stand by" shows up and it freezes. I can still move the mouse (I notice the pointer moving), the keyboard still works (toggle lighted keyboard), but the screen stays as is. The only way I've solved this is to do a hard reboot. Painful.

My other issue was from the other day. I didn't want to disturb anyone so I plugged in my headphones. After that, I couldn't control the volume. None of the volume controls worked at all. In face, only one source of audio was coming up. When I would open up youtube, no audio was coming from it.

A reboot solved the audio, but the Stand by is annoying.
Does anyone know what's going on? Any solutions?

    Thanks

    1. Are you using the Dell installed operating system (Vista or XP)? If not, what OS?

    2. Do you have any attached devices? Also what communications options do you have?

    3. Look in Event Viewer (under Computer Management) and see what events are in the system log at the time you are trying to use standby.

this was happening to our E6400's, and strangely enough, I read on here that it was tracked down to the webcam driver. Microsoft released a new driver that is causing the lockups. Go into device manager, and roll back the webcam driver, and try it again.

I couldn't believe it, but it worked for all the E6400's I have deployed at my company.

I have had the same issue with a Dell Studio 1535 laptop, using Windows XP SP3.
Aftrer updating the Webcam driver, the problem has been solved.
Officially Dell does not support WinXP for this model.
I have used the XP driver from Dell Latitude E6400 - it works perfectly.

Where can I find the older webcam driver?
The driver version I have is 1.6.3.309 (Dated 3/9/2009)

    John:
    Running Windows XP
Nothing else is connected to the notebook

Have been in contact with Support (before I read your replies on the webcam driver issue) and I updated drivers for System Software, Chipset, Audio and Video. And it still froze.

    And I can't "rollback driver" because I don't have a previous version.
Any help on where I can get the older/working driver would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    **edit:**
So I just disabled the webcam and tested it going to standy and it works. So you guys were right, it looks like it's the webcam (driver). Can someone help me get a proper driver for this. Thanks.
