    Hi,

The E4300 uses the Dell Touchpad driver and I think it feels very buggy.
It looks like the Dell uses an Alps hardware and I don't know if there are alternative driver/software out there that can help.

This is probably the first time where I'm quite annoyed by a touchpad/buttons. The touchpad buttons do not always respond immediately, sometimes requiring two presses to click. And sometimes, when I'm using the touchpad, it will automatically click on a link I didn't intend to.

I know this seems minor, but it's quite annoying at times. I almost returned the laptop because of it, but now I'm trying to live with it but it would be most helpful if there was an alternative.

Anyone else have this issue and got it fixed?

    Thanks.

I recently returned 2 new XPS M1530 laptops under the 21 day warranty because the Alps touchpads would freeze/stall. I did everything possible to find a fix. Tried probably 10-15 different Synaptics and Alps drivers. Reinstalled video drivers, chip drivers, and more. Did a clean install on both systems. Nothing fixed the crappy Alps touchpads.

My wife also has an older Inspiron 6000 with an Alps touchpad and it also does flaky stuff, such as freezing and disappearing.

I will never buy another Dell with an Alps touchpad. My 3 other Inspirons had Synaptics touchpads that worked perfectly.

I have now switched to Lenova T500.

Yeah, the touchpad in the E6500 latitude that I'm on is the worst one that I have ever used. Really. I didn't think that a touchpad could be a dealbreaker, but it is for me, b/c the pointing stick is also unusable.

I've been quite satisfied with my E4300's touchpad and pointing stick. And this is after coming from a Synaptics touchpad on my old Inspiron.

i have to agree there. While i'd prefer a synaptics, the alps is nowhere near as bad as some of the alps ones i've used. It's the best one I've ever had and very usable.

Once in a while there's a slight lag, usually after just loading something. Hopefully the drivers will continue to improve.

I got an e4300 with that button problem you described, iqwertyi. I returned it, got another with the same problem, returned that, and now i have one that works.

    it's just bad quality checks

I disable the alps apoint.exe during startup (is not needed) and all the freeze problems has been resolved. My keyboard and touchpad/stick is all working fine. Maybe you just need some tweaking from DellTpad Utility.

If you want to disable touch tap, you need to have the apoint.exe running.
The driver default setting has touch tap enabled.
Apoint.exe is the only way to disable touch-tap at start-up.
