My E4200 with 64gb solid state hard drive makes a humming noise. The humming noise is not too bad. I can usually hear it only when in a quiet room and when cpu fan is not on. My E4200 is refurbished from the Dell Outlet and about 2 months old with a backlit keyboard and the solid state hard drive.
I have noticed the humming over the last 2 weeks or so...not sure if it was making the humming noise before that...

Is this humming normal? Could the humming indicate a possible problem with my E4200?

If you can only hear it in a quiet room with the fan stopped, it is most likely normal. I've got two E6400s with SSDs in my house and they both hum or whine a little bit. Electronics just aren't perfect, so you're bound to get some noise here and there; at least it isn't as bad as the CPU whine you got on some Santa Rosa machines...

I have been noticing that the humming is intermittent. In a quiet room if I am just browsing the web and using the touchpad to control the mouse , there is no humming..the humming seems to start when I press the keyboard (my keyboard is backlit)...

So, maybe it is related to the backlit keyboard?...it is not that big of a deal...i am not in a quiet room very often.

    i don't have a backlit keyboard.
the frequency and the volume of the humming depends on what the computer (cpu?) is doing in the very moment.
if whatever it is doing has some overlaying frequency of 100Hz to 15000Hz, you hear it humming. if the frequency is higher or not really existent, then you don't hear anything.
