I just got an E4200 from the outlet. Perfect condition. Light as a feather. But the LCD kind of sucks.

The LCD is bright and clear when viewed head-on, but the slightest change in vertical angle causes the brightness and colors to vary like mad, making the system unbearable to use on my lap.

I tried to figure out who made this particular LCD, but the intel graphics driver makes it hard to get the EDID info.

The only thing that sort of worked was MonInfo:

    http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtm

And that only worked by getting the raw data string from the EDID structure, which indicates the LCD is part number "NU412." That appears to be a Dell part number corresponding to a Toshiba-made 12.1 LCD:

    http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=prov&sku=nu412

I'm probably going to return this system to Dell, but I'm curious if Dell used multiple vendors for the LCD (they usually do), and which ones people seem to like.

Feel free to run MonInfo and let us know if it reports a different LCD part number for you, and if so, how you like your LCD.

All the E4200s are like that. In fact, you're lucky that you got one that has a consistent screen. My first two had vertical pink stripes about 2" wide when viewed from an off angle.

    same part number as yours

I don't feel any problems at all.

Love my e4200, light and better build quality than e4300. But the middle of keyboard is very flex.

Well, with the E4200, the poor viewing angles are not a defect. It's just a really cheap TN screen.

Here are some comparisons of the E4200 (Toshiba LCD) and XT (AUO LCD):

I found the viewing angle to be OK. Certainly beats the viewing angle on the Unibody MacBook I had but no where as good as the Lenov X61t and Latitude XT like the previous pics show. To be fair thought tablets generally have much superior viewing angle due to the nature of their use.

Yeah, my biggest problem is with how much the brightness changes over a small change in angle. It's hard to capture on camera, and it's mostly an issue at night, but the LED backlight brightness varies with viewing angle more than the colors vary.

There are two bezel designs for the E4200 -- this one has the WWAN "wings."
