I installed Vista64 on my M2400. It came with XP64 preinstalled. Everything worked fine. Now that I have Vista I'm unable to play DVD's on my laptop. Has anybody else run into this problem?

The model is PLDS DVD+-RW DU-8A2S and
    RSBIRY R05ARK9ARSX SCSI CdRom Device

When I check under their Device Description it says it's Value is CD-Rom Device.

When you say play DVD's, do you mean movies?

Vista does not have a DVD codec preinstalled, you need to install Cyberlink PowerDVD, you should have the disk.

I found another problem with my dvd drive. It's not able to burn. I'm trying to avoid re-installing Vista.

I've tried using Imgburn, CDBurnerXP and Nero 7.10. and all of them end up with an error. I know the burner works because I've burnt using roxio when it came pre-installed. There's nothing wrong with the DVD because I used them on my desktop with Imgburn and they worked fine.

Is there a driver that I need to install? I downloaded the one off Dell's website but when I run it it says "The Target Drive Is Not Connected.". The driver is the Panasonic Firmware that applies to UJ-862A 9.5mm Trayload SATA DVDRW.

    Any ideas?

The Panasonic Firmware for UJ-862A is not compatible with your PLDS DVD+-RW DU-8A2S DVD burner and that is why it says "The Target Drive Is Not Connected".

I think the problem might have to do with the Intel SATA drivers. There have been reports on people having problem with the DVD burner in the new Latitude and Precision laptops because of buggy SATA drivers.

Have you downloaded and installed the Intel Matrix Storage Manager? It should be listed on the download section for your model on Dell's site. You can also download it from Intel, but don't download the latest version 8.6 since some people have had problems with that version. Try 8.5 instead, it seems more stable.

Thanks Orjan. I'll try that out. I'm pretty sure I installed the driver, but not the application.

I couldn't find the 8.5 on the website so I tried out the 8.6 and now my burner works.
