I uninstalled Itunes, did the registry trick and others to no avail. I believe this is a Vista update gone bad. this appears to be an all too common and horrible bug. DVD does not show up in device manager or my computer AT ALL.

So, I was just wondering if any one had any Dell specific info on this. Thanks, Dave

Check in your dell control point / power manager if you did not turn your laptop in the "long lasting power mode" - this mode enable you to have lots of battery running time but also disable the dvd drive for this...

Also force Device Manager to search for new hardware.

Thanks. Guess what? I fixed it. BY unchecking BOOT from DVD in BIOS. It came right back. I am unsure what wil happen if I have to check that feature again, but at least I was able to burn my WHS DVD! Thanks for the help. I had not tried unplugging and replugging drive.
