Dropped my D420 down a flight of stairs - It survived!

Today, I dropped my Latitude D420 down a full flight of stairs; I was carrying a bag on my shoulder along with papers and the laptop in my right hand. As I was adjusting the papers, the laptop slipped and tumbled, flipping bouncing, down the stairs. My first thoughts were "Oh s***, there goes £300 on hard disk recovery" as I ran down after it. When I opened it up it came out of Sleep immediately, as if nothing had happened and it was no worse for wear than an access panel having popped out on the bottom (I simply took the panel out and put it back it).

This was way more than the 2 foot drop in the spec but I didn't even lose my open programs. This is why I love Latitudes: They are so well built and durable, it's worth the price premium any day.

If it was sleeping then the HDD heads should be parked.

It's dropping an open and running notebook which may be calamitous.

It had been closed for about a minute so, yes, it should have been in Sleep. However, even with the heads parked I was still worried that the impact might have smashed the physical disk

Agreed, they've definitely guaranteed me as a repeat-customer.

Nothing major, only cosmetic damage :D.
