    What can one do to know for certain that a laptop is a new machine and not a factory refurbished machine??

    If you have the Service tag, you could check on Dell's website.

    manufacturers aren't allowed to sell refurbished machines as new ones, they have to clearly state it. if you find out you've been sold a refurbished one as a new one, you can get your money back/sue them.

    You will see a green refurbished sticker on the box if you receive one. And if you ask Dell when you are getting a replacement, they will tell you exactly if its refurbished or not, it's policy to do so.

    If you are getting a brand new system, it will be added in your account "in-production" and you will track at as its being built :D
