Size, weight, looks are just a few off the top of my head.

I think the E6400 is a nicer notebook and better built.
It has some nice features like the removable base to upgrade the drive, memory etc.

E6400 uses more metal to give a thinner, lighter and, I hope, more durable chassis.

I see the E5400 as the successor to the Vostro 1400: Cheaper build and heavier but fine for many users.

True, but I look upon the nvidia GPU as a liability.

I am truly hoping it is not a liability. Because I did not want it, but in order to get the BLUE model, I HAD to get the Nvidia :( But I also got the NBD warranty :)

I wouldn't be so confident. See this and for the full gory details start with part one.

After you have read all that you will understand why thermal management is high on Dell's agenda.

Here's a comparison of exterior dimensions of the E5400 and E6400-

    E5400/E6400
    Weight- 5.58lbs/4.3lbs (E6400 is 1.28lbs lighter)
    Width- 13.31"/13.1" (E6400 is .21" narrower)
    Depth- 9.61"/9.37" (E6400 is .24" shallower)
Height- 1.46"/1-1.2" (E6400 is .46"-.26" thinner, tapering design)

Construction of each as described by DELL-

E5400- Durable Polycarbonate & Aluminum LCD back and base
E6400- Magnesium Alloy LCD back and base

    Differences in features/options-

E6400- adds e-SATA port (not available on E5400); choice of Intel integrated OR nVIDIA dedicated graphics; available LED-backlit displays and multiple resolution choices; option of back-lit keyboard.

This particular E5400 configuration includes the following on the Accessories tab- E-Port, dock for charging, digital video, and USB / eSATA port support [$129]. If you un-select that item, it brings the E5400 price down to $1271.

Are you certain that you need MSO Professional, or could MSO Small Business work for you? The only difference is that Professional includes MS Access (database). It'd save you $70 or so.
