I bought an ES on Ebay but I can't make it function properly with my M4600. The system will boot but the screen will remain switched off . I get no beep sound or led error code when I turn on the machine, so I don't know where the problem lies.

you may need to return the CPU

Try taking it apart and putting it back together again.
It may just be that something didn't seat well the first time you put it back together (ram maybe).

Worth trying before you return the CPU.

I know it's happened to me before when I've swapped parts between my notebooks and one notebook doesn't pass post even though the parts were working in another notebook just 10mins earlier.

In my case it does pass post, the problem is related with the video signal, i get a black screen but windows boots normally. With the graphics card uninstalled (and c-states disabled in bios) everything works fine. Given that I want to upgrade the graphics card too I think I'll buy the amd firepro 4000 to dell ( they finally sent me a quote) and hopefully it will work together with this cpu. I suspect there must be some kind of conflict with optimus...

I did some testing and nothing seems out of normal values. I got 7100 points with passmark 8.0 beta:

Yes I did and everything works fine again, it's the ES that refuses to interwork with the graphics card I think. Also I tried to disable optimus in BIOS instead of uninstalling the mxm card but the system ends up enabling optimus after second boot which provokes black screen once again. Very strange.
