I was considering buying a used dell latitude x1 off ebay recently.
I noticed that a'lot of them have cracked LCD screens.

This seems odd and I'm wondering if dell didn't make the lid strong or what?

Does anyone know what I mean?

It is so very thin that it does make it easy to break. This is one side affect of any really thin laptop.

My X1 had a hairline crack along the hinge. It was cosmetic only and after 3 years of travelling abuse (too many drops and whipping around corners into walls.)

It is really built like a tank and I still like it better than the E4200 I have been using for the past two weeks. I really miss typing in dead silence.

I don't see a problem here. I had mine dropped in the backpack and slightly cracked in the bottom left corner with no crack of display. I think that some people just don't open their laptop carefully anough. I think Latitude X1 off ebay for 400$ or less is a very good deal.

I would possibly upgrade mine to Toshiba Portege R500 only, but it is 4 times more expensive now. Moreover, I have more trust to Dell/Samsung build quality of X1 than to that of Toshiba.
