my friend's dell vostro 1710 has a headphone socket but no speaker socket.

I recall with computers, (at lteast in the old days) that the headphone socket is a bit poor quality for speakers, that speakers should be plugged into a speaker or line out socket.

would he be best off getting new speakers with a USB cable? Is that what people do nowadays or is the headphone socket good enough for and still used for speakers these days?

do, are speaker sockets or line out sockets gone in favour of usb? are headphone sockets also legacy? what's' the situation these days?

The Vostro 1710 should have a line in socket for microphones, etc and a line out socket for speakers or headsets. Plug your speakers into the line out socket.
