Looking to replace a 6yr old Acer Aspire 17" laptop and have stumbled on the Dell business Vostro range and in particular this one,

Vostro 3750 Laptop Details | Dell UK

Usage will be mainly web/email and running specialist CAD programs (that run OK on the Acer 9301). NO gaming :) I'm happy to upgrade the RAM (£30 Crucial for 8Mb). HDD capacity isn't an issue but I note the 7200RPM speed could be a benefit.

How durable are Dell products ? It will be used in a careful environment but will see plently of hours and lid open and closes. Hinges have been the demise of the old Acer (a well known issue and many failed even under warranty) but mine has lasted 6 yrs at around 6 to 7 hours daily use and 4 to 6 "lid close and openings" a day.

The lack of junkware and availability of service manuals are two plus points with Dell.

If you're closing the lid that often, you might want to look into a Dell Latitude for an even better investment. If you need a larger screen, I would recommend getting a smaller system (14"-15") and using an external monitor. Docking stations can also be used for added convenience.

Either way, as long as the laptop is covered by warranty, you can request replacement LCD hinges if needed. You can either install them yourself (parts-only dispatch), or request a technician to do it on-site (you'll need to purchase at least basic NBD support).

Thanks for your thoughts on that Robin. I do really want a 17" laptop though rather than using external screens and so on.

The "apparent" serviceability of Dell products seems better than most in that they seem willing to supply parts. (The problem with the Acer is all the collateral damage caused... the lid felt felt no different on the day of failure but the both sides of the lid [back and the bezel] saw several fixing points disintegrate).

    Thanks

There's also the 17" Precision M6600, but it's a bit costly unless you get it refurbished from the Dell Outlet (not sure if they have that in the UK).

Vostros have come a long way from just being black-colored Inspirons, and the 3750 has an aluminum back cover and chassis (instead of plastic), so the hinge will be sturdy. Make sure to upgrade to a three-year NBD warranty for £45, as it comes standard with only one year.

Quick update... Vostro 3750 (4gb RAM) + 3yr warranty on its way :)

I spent a long time looking at Acers again and did like the 7739 but after asking some more and hearing some very positive comments on the Vostro (as well as a few negative) I've plunged for the Dell.
