Hi, unfortunately my wife got a little too excited playing tennis on the Wii and the racket part on the remote went flying and cracked my WUGXA 1900x1200 17" screen

My question is how important is it to replace the screen with the exact part code? Surely the same spec screen from another Dell laptop would work right? Would an XPS or Inspiron screen work in my Vostro?

    Cheers ;)

You'd have to find the part number in the device manager... but if I were in your situation i'd be like "Honey, i can't get a replacement for this screen, looks like YOU are buying me a new laptop" :) :) :) :p

The part number doesnt matter you just need to buy a LCD that fits and is compatible with your computer. Best choice would be a LCD for Inspiron 1720 or Vostro 1700.

Well my wife is going to pay for a new screen. But I'd rather spend as little as possible on it. I have been offered a same spec screen from a XPS laptop including the inverter, for a much cheaper price. my only concern is, will it work? As I will not have an opportunity to test it before hand, as my m8 is sending it by post.

Maybe, but probably not. Most notebook LCDs have proprietary ribbon connectors.

The part numbers are different even between the Vostro 1700 and 1710 (spare part numbers for WUXGA MP747 and H460G respectively).

Worst case, as long as you are getting it cheap and know it works, eBay it if it doesn't fit.
