This 1520 has the infamous Nvidia 9300mGS which was noted for premature heat package failures. CPU temps are in the 28-30c most of the time, GPU temps are in the 44-47c range and I do NO gaming on this laptop. Any reason to be concerned it will fail prematurely? I want it to last as long as possible as it's a 16:10 screen that no longer is in production.

I'm pretty sure those GPU failures only affected the 8400m-8600m series. Nvidia was sued pretty hard for those.

Nvidia fixed the problem with the 9 series I think, so your GPU is fine. Under 50c is perfectly fine, and you should have nothing to worry about. Also your BIOS may have an option to turn the dedicated Nvidia graphics off, and use the GMA instead.

The GPU failures affected the entire 8x00 lineup, from 8400 to 8800, not just 84 and 86. I'm not entirely convinced that the 9300m is immune from the issue either, because I think some are rebadged G86 chips from the last generation... not sure how you can tell if it is or isn't, though.

The 9300m GS seems to run on the G98 core so I'm pretty sure it could be immune to the problem.

Thanks all for the reassurance. I did a further Google search and found the Dell laptops in question. My Vostro 1520 was not on the list but surprisingly another Vostro I own which is the Vostro 1700 is. That one shocked me as I had the same 8600m GT GPU in a Vostro 1500 and I put that thru hell and back and it never gave me a problem. The 8600m GT GPU is also the plug in type.

The Vostro 1500 and 1700 both use user-replaceable cards much like the M1710. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it seeing as when it dies, you can replace it without issue. Just keep in mind that it uses a proprietary connector much like the M1710 so you cannot use other cards like MXM.

I have a vostro 1500 running as a kid machine, replace the gpu once about 1.5 years ago when it first failed.
I use i8kfan to make sure the fan spin up more aggressively and it runs fine till now.
