Hey all, I just received my first laptop, a Vostro 1510 from Dell. The specs are in my sig.
I have a few newbie questions:

    1) What is the best way to store a battery, and at what percentage should I store it? Or can I leave it in while using the AC Adapter.
    2) I can take out the battery, and run the laptop via the AC adapter right?

Thank you, I thought I read this somewhere but I can't find it.
    -Hawk.

You should top-off the battery, wrap it in a paper towel, put it in a plastic bag, and put it in the freezer. Yes, you can run your laptop without the battery on AC.

Top-off meaning to store it when it's at 100%?
    Thanks for the info ;)

I received my Vostro 1510 late today, unpacked it and am charging the battery as we speak. How long should I charge the battery? Will overnight be OK to do so? It's been charging for about 3 hours. Tomorrow I plan to power it up for the first time. It does appear to be a much nicer laptop than the Inspiron 1525 as well as also feels like it's built better.

If I have a question tomorrow about setting up the wireless router so I can begin to use the laptop wirelessly should I post my question in the wireless forum? It came configured with a 15 month McAfee antivirus package, I guess I should get that activated first before attempt to go online.

Yeah, you should charge it up all the way.

You don't need to charge the battery before you power it up. You can turn it on right now. Hell, you can probably do a full 0 to 100 percent in three hours. If you've got a problem with networking, you should ask the networking section.

If I wanted to use the laptop for most of the time on A.C. power rather than battery power should I remove the battery from the laptop first or would it be OK to leave the battery installed inside the laptop while I'm using it on A.C. power?

Personally I would keep the battery attached to the laptop. It would serve as a UPS (uninterpretable power supply) in the event the power goes out in your home.

Once the battery is charged to 100% it sits there untouched, unless the AC power goes out.

    Hi,

just a question concerning the battery.

Is keeping the battery at 100% better then for long life than removing it and occasionally using it?

ie. in the situation a laptop spends 5 days a week plugged in and 2 days travelling

I had an HP Pavilion which lost the battery after 1 year of almost constant 100% charge.

I just got a 1510 too. I think the general consensus on the battery is if you're using the laptop on AC most of the time, take the battery out and store in the fridge at 40% charge for best battery life. Then when you know you're going to need to run on battery only, put the battery back on, and plug in the AC adapter for a few hours to charge it to 100% ahead of time so it will be fully charged for your session.

I asked these battery questions earlier. Found out you can plug in AC while running on battery or even unplug the battery while on AC, no problems.

    A good read:
