I have windows vista Ultimate on my Dell Vostro 1510 and my DVD drive (OPTIARC AD-7640A) acts like cd-rom & doesn't recognize dvd's. I have tried all kind of dvds (+/-/original/copy) but all i got is a noise !

    I searched everywhere & tried:

    1.Uninstall/installing the drive
2.removing registry keys (upper and lower filters )
    3.firmware update JD06
    4.System Restore

my warranty is from Europe but i live in middle east , so i don't have the chat/email option in dell support website.

anybody can help or have the same problem?

I have the exact same problem as you have. I can play CDs but when I insert dvd disc it just giving noises (like it's reading the dvd) but the laptop becomes unresponsive and took me few minutes before I can eject the disc out...

Do you have a Vista disc? Isn't that a DVD?

If it is a DVD and you can't boot from it, then the optical drive has a problem. If you can boot from the disc then Windows has a problem.

I didn't try the vista disc, but the weird thing is it is able to read other dvd disc but not this particular disc. Then I thought probably my disc is faulty, but then again I tried this particular disc on 2 other laptops and the laptop read the disc just fine...

Is that a commercial pre-recorded DVD? If so, it should not cause trouble. If it is on recordable media then it is possible that the burner can't handle it. The lower power ratings of notebook optical drives make them less tolerant.

First carefully try to remove any dust on the lens. If that doesn't help, are you still in warranty. if so, ask for a replacement optical drive.
