so my laptop seems to have problems staying on my home network. the little globe thingy is there but sometimes the connection just times out and doesn't let me surf the net anymore. even when i connect it directly my surfing ability is random. i thought it was my homenetworks fault but since I am receiving an IPv4 address from my ISP I think it may be my laptop. Especially since I tried connecting another computer directly to my network and that worked fine.

This is really strange, seems like my homenetwork is the only network I am experiencing problems with.

What hardware components could cause this issue so I could get a tech over to replace them.

Are you wireless or direct connect with Cat 5 cable?

If wireless, what card are you using? What operating system? How far are you connecting from the router and how many walls and floors-if wireless?

Are you using Windows to manage the connection or the card?

Are you using a static IP or MAC address?

Are you using security like WEP?

Right now I am directly connected and I think it is a cat5 cable sincec there is written CAT5e on the cable

my wireless card is a Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection

    and i have a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller

When I am wireless I am 2 feet away from the router, vista business 32-bit sp1

I have no idea what the diffrence is between windows managing my connection or the card, how do I find out?

I have no idea either what I am using, how do you find out?

When I was connected through a router, I had built up a password to protect my connection.

    thanks for the help

I am using the same wireless card and I have dropped the connection on occasion. I assigned a static MAC address which has helped reduce the problem.

If you go to the Device Manager and right click on the network adapter, you can check the settings for your card in properties.

You might also check on updating the drivers on your card. If you go to intel.com, you can get the most current driver. I am using 12.1.0.14

If you go to the Control Panel>Network and Sharing> click on View Status on the connection, you can click on Wireless Properties to set the Intel card to manage the connection and set a static MAC address.

What I posted above would have nothing to do with the direct connection. It is for wireless.

For that network adapter, the only thing that I can think of would be to check the Control Panel>Device Manager>Network Adapters>Broadcom and check the properties to see if they are set correctly and make sure that the power saver box is unchecked. Sometimes, the power saver will disconnect the connection.

You still should check the properties in Network and Sharing on the Broadcom adapter.

You could delete your connections and set up new connections, also.

You might also reset the router by turning it off and wait 15 seconds and turn back on. We have to reset ours every once in a while.
