I use the protruding battery on my 1310 as perfect handle/grip for when I am using the computer standing up or some situation where I need to hold the laptop with one arm and use it with the other.

It doesn't add too much of a bulk in my opinion.

I have the 9 cell, and yes it does add a little bulk... but it is behind the laptop and you will never see it. upgrading from a 6 cell to a 9 cell only costs you about $20, whereas if you look up the price difference between the two battery types, there is nearly a $100 difference. I would definitely recommend the 9 cell any day.

20$? wow, thats cheap. You do see your battery...if you carry it around like a normal 13 inch notebook, than you'll probably see it often and feel the weight.

as for the think pads, I think they look professional. But nothing fancy about them. Maybe thats the look you like. As for thinkpad's quality, its probably a lot better than a lot of notebooks around.
