So, being a consumer, how would I go about buying from Dell Small Business without actually being a business?

Is there anything special one needs to do to be able to purchase from Dell Small business?

I bought an Inspiron 6400 from the business section in 2006, and I can't remember doing anything special.

i bought mine online through the dell chat feature. When they asked for my business name, I said it was for personal use and they didn't mind or say anything.

There are no restrictions. Just go to the Small Business site and place your order. They'll ask you for business name when you go order, but it doesn't have to be a real business, although you do have to put something in the field (like n/a or your name)

Is there anyway to use my DPA account (once I apply that is)? I don't have a credit card with a large enough balance for the laptop I want to get (Latitude XT2).

Think if I called a Rep they could work something out?

of course call in or talk to them online...if you cant get a good deal then just hang up / close the chat box and try again. each rep is different, some say they can "only do 15%" but it really varies between reps.

I think you misunderstood my question. I want to know if I can use DPA somehow to purchase a Latitude. There isn't an option to to online, but if I called Dell rather than order online, what are the chances of using DPA?

I am pretty sure this is no longer possible but it cannot hurt to call up and check. The reps have a bit more leverage than the web-based system itself. You cannot purchase Latitudes on DPA (I have been in the same boat many times). In the old days you could use your DPA on at least the business outlet but even that isn't possible anymore.

Speaking of Outlet, I would highly recommend you get a XT2 from the Outlet rather than the retail channel. Advantages are fast shipping and much lower prices since XT2 is a rip-off otherwise. You just missed the Spring Sale 20% off coupon that would have landed you a XT2 at under a grand.

I think it's interesting to note that if I buy from Dell through the EPP my university has for students with Dell, DPA is a purchase option, even the Latitudes. It's actually a bit more expensive that way though, right now anyway.
