hi, i just registered to ask that simple question: ist the dell pointing stick compatible with IBM (lenovo) trackpoint caps? im a long term thinkpad user, but i dont like the built quality (especially the thin and unstable palmrest) of the new w530 and i dont like the new keyboard so i want to move to m4700, but im a trackpoint-only user (never use touchpad), and i would like to use the lenovo trackpoint cap "soft-rim" on the m4700 wich im used to for such a long time and think its way better than the dell soft-rim.

possible? anyone tried to fit lenovo caps on dell pointing stick?

    thanks in advance.

I've heard from other people that you can swap the cap but you might be disappointed by the (Dell) point stick if you are used to a (Lenovo) trackpoint, even with the cap swap it doesn't behave quite the same.

It is different size (the bottom that cap on to the stick), probably need a mod. Where thinkpad one will fit HP machines.
Let us know update, trying to do the same~~

The point stick on the M4700 is simply terrible. I can't believe Dell isn't doing something about it, it's that bad. Everytime I use my Thinkpad, it's like day and night.

On top of that, you can't press a keyboard key and move the point stick at the same time. So if you're using Photoshop, and you're trying to move the viewport by holding the space bar, it simply won't work.

I'm simply using an external mouse 95% of the time so it's not really bothering me.

Wow, So I've submitted this bug to Dell over a year ago. Sorry I hadn't seen your post there is a work around to Dell's refusal to address and fix this bug.

Work around for Dell pointer stick typing and pointing simultaneously:

    1) start task manager
    2) kill Apoint.exe (please note your pointer may stop moving at this point)
    3) press and release windows key to bring up system menu.
    4) get to the search box and type apoint.exe
    5) use arrow keys to select from list if necesary
    6) happy mousing and typing.

If anyone uses VM Ware this defect that Dell refuses to switch is also why there are occasional issues entering VM windows with mouse and keyboard grabbing.

Please share this and if anyone knows a dell exec hit them for me for sucking at customer service.
