Yeah they say that about xm and higher end gpu's but I have an xm and a 980m never had any excessive heat problems and fans all work fine, no need for 3rd party software for fan control. I wouldn't touch an 880m though, a 970m outperforms it and is a lot lower tdp, and the 880m isn't any cheaper usually either.

880m kills any kxxxxm card by a long shot, go to notebookcheck and lookup the cards, scroll down to the detailed testing to the firestrike graphics score and you'll get a consistent accurate score for each card. K4100m there is 3654 for firestrike graphics, 880m is 6101. 980m is 9600(mine comes in at 9300), 970m is 7463(when I had one it was 7200/7500), 780m is 5244 so there's a good range of what performs how afa nvidia goes. They even have games benchmarks testing results fps so it's the most complete card ratings I've seen.

Well i am going to buy the GTX 970M, crossing fingers i don't come up with the previous nightmare with the GTX 980M, was considering the price it has it's reasonable, compared with the overpriced GTX 980M

Hi, does someone here got an GTX 1070 mxm laying around ?
I would like to try if a slightly modified P5000 vbios would work with the 1070 in the M6700 or M6800 :)

Yeah makes sense it is overpriced but if you stalk eb you can get one for a decent price, kinda a bummer if you buy a 970m for 175 and then see a 980m up there for around 200. Still if you go out and get a modern gpu that is 980m level, 1050ti, 1650, 1060mq, the laptop will cost overall more than getting an old laptop and sticking a 980m in there. Esp if you have parts laying around to put in an incomplete used old laptop like the precisions.

I have a question about wifi cards for the m6700, I got a centrino 6300N ultimate a while back as an upgrade to the low end wifi card that this came with, it works fine even though I had to hunt for drivers as dell doesn't have drivers for it, it wasn't offered for the m6700 and it's discontinued by intel but somehow I did find the right proset drivers for it for win7. Would I possibly get better speeds etc w a newer wifi card? What ones would be compatible? I'm still on win7 mind you.

Edit: turns out the 6300n was offered w the m6700 as an upgrade I had the 1504 low end edition previously.

Basically any mini-PCIe card will work fine. You can find Intel and Broadcom 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 5) cards available on eBay. I have a link in my signature about getting newer NGFF/M.2 cards installed which would allow 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) cards to be installed. Newer Intel cards only have Windows 10 drivers though.
(Windows 7 is EOL next month; you can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free if you just run the tool and put in your Windows 7 product key if asked.)

Hm good to know, I'll look it up but unless I get a decent upgrade as far as possible speeds seems like a no go. I don't have any immediate plans to "upgrade" my main laptop OS though, I'm good using it on my backup laptop but not my main one. I guess if I do decide it'll be a price/perf ratio vs what I already have, that was 5 buck shipped to my door lol

or you could also get a "cheap" intel 7260ac card on regular mpcie, that's what I got and it work fine :)

Hm yeah I see it has max up to 867 and the 6300n has 450Mbps, I guess if I ever get my own router I might just do that upgrade, it is currently a low of 15 bucks on eb. I only get a speedtest of 168 and I'm right on the other side of the wall from the router here.

Not sure about the 6300n, but the 7260ac can run up to 300Mbps in wifi N, while the 6300n seems to be 450Mbps in wifi N, however 450Mbps wifi N router are not common
