    Just applied liquid metal to my M6700. Wow!

    Stressing all eight threads of CPU resulting 80C. Before, one thread at 100% easily gives me 105C (I suppose my previous thermo paste got old...)

    Thanks for the valuable info!!!

    Time to dive into overclocking...

    Success! 3940XM overclocked on M6700.

    Single core: 4.3 GHz (Well, I set it as 4.3, but in reality it only reaches 4.2)

    Multi cores: 4.2 GHz

    Can anyone help me out with inf modding? I know it's been done a lot here but I get really confused about what needs changing, too many number letter combos. I obv have a 6700, going from k4000m to an aetina brand 970m. Didn't know what brand it was when I bought it.

    System boots up but w optimus on or off it just assigns a generic vga driver to it. When I use the 391.xxx and 436.xxx driver package it just says no comp hardware detected. Bios sees it as 6gb unknown card, so it's there. I'm attaching a gpuz capture of what it sees when optimus is off. I started a txt file with what I think I need but I just get lost in all the explaining.

    Here's some pulls from the nvdmi.inf I was working with I think it was 391 or 436. Win7x64

    NVIDIA_DEV.13D8.05AB.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M"
    NVIDIA_DEV.13D8.0685.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M"
    NVIDIA_DEV.13D8.0688.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M"
    NVIDIA_DEV.13D8.0708.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M"
    NVIDIA_DEV.13D8.0709.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M"

    NVIDIA_DEV.11BD.053F.1028 = "NVIDIA Quadro K4000M" mine 10de 11bd-1028 053F in gpuz
    NVIDIA_DEV.11BD.153F.1028 = "NVIDIA Quadro K4000M" 153 optimus on, 053 optimus off

    Are the above the lines I'm working with to change in the inf? Do I just swap out stuff there? I want both optimus on and off changed since I noticed that some games don't have as many resolution options w optimus on as I don't always use 1080p it's nice to have a few more resolutions to adjust for fps. I think my k4000m had a range of id's one with a subsys.

    -Do I need a vbios flash for this since it's not showing up in the bios? Panel type in bios?

    1. so from what I gather nvdmi.inf is what I need to change? I'm working with 436.30 win7x64 file.
    2. Uh so my guess is the 11BD->13D8 and 053F->?, 1028 same? In all places and replace inf file.
    3. How to disable driver signature again?
    4. PROFIT.

    Those are not the right lines to modify. Those are just text variables. You are looking for values that look like this:
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_08311028
    (They will be on the right side of a line.)
    You need to select one and change it to match your card's device ID as seen in device manager. You will need to change all occurrences because there will be multiple in the same INF file (for different versions of Windows). You do not need to change the values on the left side of the same line. Those are only there to match up with the lines that you pasted above, and their only purpose is to get the card's name to show up in Device Manager, it doesn't matter if their IDs actually match the hardware ID.

    So again. Find a value that looks like this:
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1CBB&SUBSYS_08311028
    ...but that is actually for a different GeForce 970M card. (This particular one is for a Quadro P1000.) Ideally it is the ID used in a system that supports Optimus, if you have Optimus enabled in your system. Replace all occurrences of this with your own card's hardware ID. You don't need to change anything else. You do need to disable driver signature checking.

    In this post I describe the replacement I do to get my M5000M working.

    Uh I'm not seeing that when I search the inf file, how to know what a 970m is in that list if the one you mentioned doesn't show up?

    Edit: Does this look right?

    Original in inf file:
    %NVIDIA_DEV.13D8.0688.1028% = Section124, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D8&SUBSYS_06881028

    replace with:
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D8&SUBSYS_153F1028
    leave left side unchanged.

    If you search the left side of this line ("NVIDIA_DEV.13D8.0688.1028") you will get another line that describes the card ("NVIDIA_DEV.13D8.0688.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M"" like you had above). You don't actually need to change these values, it is just a trail of breadcrumbs to follow.

    So, what you have found looks like a decent one to try to replace.

    If you look for [Section124] you will see a list of configuration options just for this card. If you see "NVSupportMSHybrid = 1" in the list then it is a configuration that supports Optimus. (At least that is how it has worked out with me and the Quadros.)

    SUCCESS! While I was at it I just got the latest drivers from oct 1. Optimus working didn't touch anything in the actual section settings. Passmark and fsg scores right where they should be. Did get a bsod once not sure what happened but seems fine now. It was a lot easier than I thought but until you do it, it seems hard. Weird thing is that fsg lists both the hd4000 and the 970m but the results say "vga adapter" by dell and error of "device not recognized" the score is where it needs to be very close to the one on the list. The first time I ran passmark it actually detected 3 gpu's on the home screen but the next test, which I just used msiab to push up +135, +60 it only showed 2, weird. Idles at 42, never really gets above low 60's nice. @Aaron44126 THANKS MAN!

    Edit: I now have a lot of screwing to do!(and not the good kind LOL)

    Hello, guys ! Does anybody tried to restore the paint coverage on the top case of our precisions ? 'cause some dents and scratches had happened for this years, so i want it to be restored more or less. I tried to visit special auto service unit 'cause i wanted to take some help from the colourist, but there was no advice... Maybe you would help me with this "metallic-bronze" colour number...
    Vělké děkujeme Vam.

    It is probably easier just to replace the screen assembly/lid. I bought a brand new one on eBay for just $20 a couple of months ago.

    Instead of some kind of "Smart Repair" I highly suggest to buy a new display cover. They are selling from time to time for far less than 50 €/$ mostly including whole bunch of accessoires like hinges, display cables, WLAN/WWAN antennas...

    Here is a very good offer: https://www.ebay.de/itm/Dell-Precis...311657&hash=item5212c84e56:g:Ji4AAOSwXitb4Jvq

    But beware, as far I know there are 2 or 3 different display covers varying from each other due to EDP/LVDS/Touch(?), so check the part number of your actual cover first (look on Dell website for the system configuration of your specific device using the Service Tag number).

    Edit: To slow... Aaron44126 already replied. I had the thread opened for a while without refreshing the page again ;)
