Dell Precision M6700 Owners Thread

Hi all.

After four years in use, my m6700 keeps producing bluescreens; it says things like "IRQL not less or equal", or "DPC watchdog violation" or "Kernel security check failure".

Bought a new windows 10 version, put it on a different hard-drive, but no difference. Chipset and graphics drivers update, no difference. Made a bios-update, no difference.

Now they've recommended replacing the graphics card in a win-10-forum to me; Until now, I had the k4000m

My question: What new graphics card would fit in? If it's a bit faster than the k4000m I wouldn't bother, but definitely don't need a ferrari, and have to save money currently. I do a lot of picture-processing with Adobe CS6

From all symptoms you mentioned this really sounds like a thermal issue and from your listing it also seem that you never tried cleaning fans and more important adding new thermal paste for the cooling of CPU and GPU itself, right?

If so please download the maintenance manual for your M6700 and figure out how to disassemble your device.

 

The fans were cleaned one or two years ago; don't know if the guy put thermal paste though; but anyway, I rarely have fan-noise ... if it's a thermal issue, fans should run most of the time, no?

 

Yes, if there is a thermal issue fans should kick in, but if the temperature is rising faster than the fan hysteris is able to tell the fans to start up, it's also possible that bluescreens occur due to thermal shutdown.

So anyway I suggest to check the idle temperatures from CPU and GPU by using hwinfo or something similar, before looking for grahic card replacement

 

it almost always happens when I start from energy-saver-mode; I can open 30 large pictures and it doesn't happen; what's also peculiar is that mouse-clicks time and again open a file with only one click, while they normally should open with two;

what does "hysteris" mean ... can't find the word in the web; thanks for your informations, I will try to gather the necessary data about heat

 

Oh sorry, I meant "hysteresis" so the electrical control of the fan curve so that it's not starting from zero to full speed immediately.

 

Try disabling LPM in IRST and Windows power settings.

 

Also do a memory check... Bad RAM can cause BSOD issues like that.

I ran memtest for a few minutes until 800 % coverage with no flaws; there was a note however that Windows only allows between 2 and 4 GB of ram to be tested, and I have 8; didn't find out how to run the tool parallel and how to name the two different ram-sections in the tool.

then I made a hardware-info test but can't see where temperatures are indicated

couldn't find out how to disable just LPM because it doesn't appear as an option for harddrives in the power-settings; found an article about how to change the registry so that this option may appear, but don't dare doing this; checked how to disable IRST in Bios; under "SATA Operation" it says "Raid On", under "Performance" there is only an option to vary minutes, mine is set to 30 minutes, but no option for disabeling;

Hey guys, been rocking my m6700 for a few years. Taking it travelling abroad with me since the desktop is impractical.

Currently sporting a 3740QM + K4000M (Heavily overclocked). Looking to beef it up for gaming. Should I just pop a 980m in? I seem to be able to find them online for the $350-400 CAD range. Has anyone tried a newer GPU with success? Wondering if it would be better performance per dollar to get a GTX 780M for around $220. Thoughts?

Already upgraded from a Quadro 3000M to a K3000M to K4000M . Thanks
