having seen them both in person, the m17x seems huge in comparison. It may pack a bit more under the hood, but to me it was almost comical to pick it up and act like it was a notebook. Both can handle most anything you throw at it, but I like the M6400 because it has a true dock you can get for it. You can be mobile with it and then pop it down without having to plug anything in.

not to mention the m6400 has business grade build quality, magnesium alloy construction and was designed for reliability

(you dont want your notebook to hang when you're 90% through a 6 hour long rendering job lol)

They might look manky but they're aluminium as well.
Plus the cooling on them is absolutely fantastic..easily the best cooling I've seen on a notebook.
I've the M6400 and I use mine for gaming and it runs all games easily on it..no probs whatsoever since I fixed those bloody BSODs :)

I would say go with the M17X. I just got a M6400 as a replacement system and they said it was a new build and it was not. A chip in the finish on the bottom where it had been docked and undocked several times. The bezel is warped below the LCD screen. You will have "popping" sounds from the speaker. (The fix is on these forums.) Also the headphone jack doesnt work.
Had garbled sound too but fixed it by removing an application. The bios layout is strange too. I will be selling this as soon as I buy another pc. Oh, the AC power adaptor brick is huge and gets very hot.

Heh, the same power adapter is used for both the m17x and M6400 - there is a slimmer version available as an option - still big, but also thin :)

I bought my m6400 from ebay from a reseller that traded in dell outlet reconditioned PCs - most importantly as an official dell reseller they could transfer the onsite warranty. The machine was pristine. The speakers work fine on mine, though the sound from my defunct XPS M170 lpatop was better (bass), and I expect that the M17X would also be better in that department.
