Dell Precision 7XXX with Coffee Lake

Any thoughts or ideas of when Dell is likely to add intel's latest and greatest to the 17.3" Precision line of laptops? Will they put it in the newest 7200 as a config option or wait for a new model to come out do you think?

Dell will not release a new model until the full set of mobile CPUs are available (including Xeons). Precision is usually among the last of their products to be refreshed. I'd look at Q2 2018 at the earliest.

Anyone in the community have any idea what/when the next iteration of Quadro GPU's will look like? Probably won't see a precision refresh until those are available as well.

 

Nvidia Volta is the next generation GPU after current Nvidia Pascal. Some articles are guessing early 2018 for the GTX Volta desktop cards to appear. The Quadro desktop variants take awhile longer after that and then eventually the mobile laptop Quadro Volta will appear and usually coincide with with next tick/tock of Intel mobile CPU. It is that testing and certification which supposedly causes the delay between when the new GTX cards first appear and the Quadro mobile cards appearing in workstations.. My wild guess I'd say maybe late 2018 or early 2019 for a Dell Precision to release with Volta graphics. But who knows. There may be an interim precision release with Coffee and Pascal, but usually only when next gen quadro appears will they release new precision.

 

Been watching Precision launches for a while... Refreshes align with Intel's CPU refresh cycle (delayed by a few months), I've never seen them delay to wait for an NVIDIA part to be ready. On the contrary, HP and Lenovo follow the same cycle as Dell for their workstations and NVIDIA is aware of this, and will make new mobile Quadros available for all three manufacturers in time for the refresh.

In the event that NVIDIA Volta GPUs are not available in time (which seems likely at this point), NVIDIA will probably offer refreshed Pascal Quadros (i.e. Quadro P5100 or P5200, 4100/4200, etc.) with a minor bump in core count and clock speed. As the GPUs aren't refreshed mid-generation, for NVIDIA Volta GPUs, we'll have to wait for the Ice Lake generation of Precisions.

It usually seems like it takes a long time for the NVIDIA technology to make its way to the mobile Quadro line used in the Precision but it really just depends on how well NVIDIA's refresh cycle lines up with the Intel/Precision refresh. Maxwell was delayed by over a year because the cycles lined up poorly, but Kepler was available in the Precision M6700 (Quadro K5000M) just weeks after it launched in the GeForce on the desktop.
