Be careful with the ECC memory you get. Use only a designated third party module for your build in case of ECC as it needs some special bits on it that not every module has. If you use non designated module you may get into trouble with the DRMT (Dell Reliable Memory Tech) and the errors are showing up in unexptected manners. Especially after a bios upgrade you may get a system running in emergency amber mode till you manually clean the RMT log in the bios!

e.g.: use a manufacturer that states compatibiliy like Kingston: https://www.kingston.com/germany/de/memory/search/systemdevices?makeOrModel=dell+precision+mobile

source: own experience with my 7730 and third party ram... led me to much trouble and pain till I got this resolved; You can use non designated third party but you need to take care for the RMT yourself then.

Understood...I've been researching in the 7750 threads and saw the long discussion.

I did manage to find this one from CDW which is taking pre-orders but I'm going to keep looking and will wait until delivery gets closer before deciding one way or the other on ECC.

So just to make sure, 3466mhz won't work on the precision 7760 as aftermarket upgrades? So 3200mhz is the max?

Sometimes, aftermarket memory upgrades with "unsupported specs" will work fine. We won't know until someone tries. (I rather doubt that it would make any noticeable difference in performance, though.)

Oh... I hope I don't have to be the Guinea pig....
The reason why I'm concerned about memory is because 3D rendering takes up a lot of memory bandwidth once GPU memory is full. Though maybe 3200 to 3466mhz is a very small increase. I suppose only ddr5 will make a noticeable difference.

Usually, higher memory modules come with higher CL so it ends up being a bit of a wash in the end. (Though Dell tends to ship modules with CL values on the high end, that might be something you can improve on without going out of spec.)

By any chance do you know what CL value the 3200mhz ram on the 7750 has?

That's good to know, thanks for the information. Even if the TDP should be capped at 115W, it should still be faster than the RTX 3070 mobile, right? Since that one has only 110W and mostly slightly lower specs.

    Hi all

After months and months of serious ongoing problems with my 7740 Dell have finally agreed to replace it, and are offering me a new 7760.

    When I got my 7740, I installed 128GB RAM in it - "Dell Precision Mobile Workstation 7740 Compatible Upgrade - 32GB DDR4 PC4-21300 2666MHz 260-pin SODIMM" x 4

Will this memory work ok in a 7760? I believe the 7760 can take up to 3200MHz - would I see a noticeable difference if I upgraded from 2666 to 3200? I do a lot of work with 3D scan data/point clouds and regularly max out the 128 GB - some of the processing runs can take 12-18 hours or so.

The CPU in the 7760 will be a i9-11950H if that's relevant.

    Many thanks

    Here is a nice article:
    https://techteamgb.co.uk/2021/05/19...s-how-much-does-ram-speed-affect-performance/
My impression is that it could make a few % difference if the workload is RAM intensive and not limited by the CPU utilization (as it sounds in your case).
