I'd upgrade to the 8 core xeon at least.

It's unfortunate Pro Support Plus doesn't cover theft. That would make me bump the number of years. But you can't have it all I guess.

Yes, backlit keyboard included :) Forgot to mention.
I'm wondering if the aluminum lid has any impact on wifi and LTE signal. Or maybe they do the same as Apple https://apple.stackexchange.com/que...luminium-enclosure-with-rf-on-the-macbook-pro

120£ to bump to the 8-core. Cheap for 20-25% more compute power.
What I'm wondering is if I'm really going to use it. OTOH better safe than sorry.

BTW, what are those options for asset report and asset tags? I take it that's only required for companies to track inventory.

Think I saw that there is no WWAN option if you get the aluminum lid. They probably don't include the WWAN antennas. (Haven't heard anyone complaining about poor Wi-Fi signal.)
Yes, asset tag stuff is for company inventory management.

The aluminum lid has a gray plastic slit across the screen at the level where the WLAN antennas are located on both sides of the camera and microphone.

Oh, and attached is a photo of the aluminum lid inside of the 7740 if you are curious.

I recently did some "aftermarket" upgrading and now have a 40-pin display cable paired with a 120hz 1080p 94% NTSC panel in my 7740 carbon fiber lid. It was the one last thing that I really missed when I sold my MSI workstation laptop.

@win32asmguy, quick question: does said 40-pin display have a pin pitch of 0.5 mm, or 0.4 mm? Panelook's detailed specs page would say so. I'm actually waiting on a Precision 7730 4K display cable to install in my 7530 (P/N 011GD).

The display that's waiting to go in is the 144 Hz 10-bit 1080p AUO B156HAN10.0, but I was looking through Panelook, and found a very, very interesting 120 Hz 4K 100% ARGB 8-bit display, the AUO B156ZAN05.1.

240 Hz @ 4K... That's a whole lot of bandwidth. Any indication on whether current-gen GPUs would be able to drive such a thing over eDP?

    ...
Dug a bit and it looks like DisplayPort 2.0 does support the bandwidth requirement to drive such a display. Wouldn't be surprised if it works but only with graphics switching turned off...

*facepalm*. That was a typo: I meant 120 Hz.

Even so, it's 8x the bandwidth of my current 60 Hz 1080p. eDP 1.4 supports 4K @120 Hz with 30 bits per pixel, and this display is only 24 bits. My biggest concern is power draw, rather than bandwidth.

It is 0.5mm pin pitch. Only the Sharp UHD panels used the 0.4mm pin pitch connector, and as far as I know Dell never used any Sharp panels on their 17.3 inch model. I think it has a good chance to work, so long as the excess cable does not prevent the palm rest from sitting flush when it is re-installed. I had lot of trouble with that with mine as the 40-pin cable is thicker than the 30-pin. You may also need to get a IR webcam module and associated parts if your machine doesn't already have one. The 7740 40-pin cable is only available with the IR webcam connector and unfortunately it is not the same connector used on the standard webcam. I am looking into the parts needed to install one in my carbon fiber lid.

That 120hz 4k panel sounds interesting. It uses mini-LED so I am not sure how compatible the backlight would be with the Precision, but who knows maybe it will be added as an option to the 7550 / 7750.

Hello. Need a bit of help. I have just received DELL Precision 7740 and met some issues with sound.
When I play online video, for every 5-8 minutes I hear as speakers "glitch", goes more quiet and the sound seems to go from somewhere inside of the laptop, but not the speakers. That lasts for 2-3 seconds. It repeats again after 5-8 minutes and I can't do it on purpose.
I have installed new drivers for speakers, but it didn't help. Also I have updated BIOS.
What may be causing this problem?
