Good catch ! I do use the old style dock for ease of use with another laptop and a second monitor. I don't like the new docks where you have to plug stuff but I don't have a choice.
As for storage I will keep my 5TB and upgrade later.
So far the config I'm planning to get is:
i9-9980HK (Thought about the Xeon but don't want the thing to be overheating with the load I'll be putting on it).
8GB Ram => to be upgraded to 128GB on delivery.
2.5 HDD => to be upgraded to 4TB on delivery
    Fingerprints + NFC
    Non touch Display
    Intel HD Graphic
    Ubuntu Linux
I will reuse the current 1TB nvme stick.
When I upgrade to full nvme I will get a new 6-cell battery.

Now the fingerprint scanner I have on the m7510 is a big ripoff as it takes 5 seconds to recognize my fingerprints.
I see two types of fingerprint readers on this model: one with a brown surface (which I have) and another one with a black surface. How does the smaller one with the black surface work? Is it quicker? If it's like the one I have I'm not buying it. A complete joke.

Config price => 2216€ (includint VAT)

The black one is better. It is NOT the FIPS one, which is the gold one that you describe. Get that and you will be happier.
(Not sure if they let you configure it along with an Ubuntu build, though ...?)

Thanks for the info. Will see if I can get it with Ubuntu.

Edit: I confirm it is possible to add the non-fips fingerprint reader with Ubunto.
    Thanks.

Now for the display. I have this one LQ156D1 [DELL P/N: 43N80] on my current m7510 and I would like to get the same. I returned the first m7510 I got back in 2016 which had a touch igzo something display. I'm going for the same display 15 IPS FHD. I hope it's the same quality. I don't need 4K or any of that suff. What's with the Ultrasharp thing?

I don’t know why you couldn’t transplant your current display into the 7540 if you don’t end up being happy with the one that comes in it. Both systems use eDP for the display connection and the display is pretty easy to remove / swap out.

That sounds a pretty brilliant idea but I don't think I will have the heart to rip the displays off :)
After checking the m7510 invoice I found out that I ordered a Touch IPS display at first and ended up sending it back and getting the non touch UltraSharp UHD IGZO (3840x2160) one which is more expensive and which I like a lot. I have it on the m3800 too an that's why I was disappointed with the ips m7510 display. I culdn't go from the m3800 IGZO display to the IPS one. It was like going back in time.
So I'm adding it to the list. It has the IR camera for faceid if I decide to use it (with windows hello of course).
I'm also adding the NVIDIA Quadro T1000. So the bill has gone higher :)
I think I'm all set. I made the choice to get the i9-9980HK instead of the xeon. I know xeon is better for vmware stuff but I read that it is power hungry and does heat much more than the i9. Arc Specs look the same apart from ecc ram support in the xeon.

Well I didn't know it was that easy but after watching this video I'm going to follow your advice. I know I will not like the IPS screen for sure but I will swap it right away with the one in my m7510. Thanks again for the info.

    Tips from the video link:

In this video I upgrade my Dell Precision 7510 lcd panel. Original panel was Dell oem 45% color gamut panel. It is dim and colors are not vibrant. Terrible panel for such a great laptop! I used panelook.com to look for compatible panels. Using advanced search for 15.6" eDP panels with brightness above 300cd/m, FullHD and 16.8M colors quickly narrows results. Further sorting list by "Stocks" and looking up panel code in amazon / aliexpress left me with just few choices. Look for these panels - N156HHE-GA1 - NV156FHM-N61

If you want the UHD IGZO display then just order it with your machine - the FHD IPS displays use different mounting brackets and cables that are not compatible. Dell Spare Parts also seems to not sell the UHD screen parts individually - only the entire lid unit with display installed, for more than double the cost of the upgrade option at the time of purchase.

Are you sure about the compatibility? Any links or videos or official info?

Looks like the edp port on the ips fhd displays is 30pin 2 lanes whereas the one on the igzo is 40pin 4 lanes. Will have to order the igzo then. I guess I can swap things from the m7510 with all the connectors but don't want to go into all that plus warranty voiding like you said.
    Thanks.

Attached is a photo of the 7740 UHD cable. It appears the elusive part number is 7XT8V.
