Dell Precision 7540 and 7740 Owner's Thread

As another user stated, get rid of the "m" and stop reporting "9 mW" or "15 mW" which is confusing... 15 mW is a truly tiny amount of power. You're either talking about 15 W or 15,000 mW.

Disabling the NVIDIA GPU in device manager doesn't power it off, but it does get rid of the GPU power management so that can lead to an increase in the system power draw.

I am curious about your system specs, in particular what type of RAM do you have installed and how much? Is it ECC?

 

Disabling the card through Device Manager also disables PCIe power management like ASPM, etc.

This is why power draw skyrockets when you do that.

With Lightroom, are you in the Develop mode when you minimise it with an image loaded?

 

Watts, my bad. I've corrected the initial post.

I have 64GB RAM with ECC.

I've tried both Develop and Library mode. The draw goes to about 18W with Firefox and never goes less than 15W on idle.

 

Disabling all non microsoft services is also a fine way to disable lots of system drivers that would lower power usage, because now almost all hardware is running again because no driver told it to stop and save power...

Tweaking for the sake of tweaking and saying hey I disabled that, must be more better now isn't the best course of action.

Do a clean install, dont mess with the system like you are doing, let windows updates install the drivers, install anything missing from Dell website, make sure that Intel chipset and Intel ME drivers are installed, see how it goes.

Lots of people on this forum love to diss Windows 10 and to muck around in registry "fixes" only to then complain about how unstable the OS is after all those fine enhancements..

 

@Soromeister: do enable the 'Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area' setting in the NVIDIA driver control panel, and check that no other apps are keeping the dGPU active.

Otherwise, this is fairly par for the course: the dGPU is definitely active, somehow, and Dell is refusing to fix it.

I have to admit i messed up on the disassembly and ripped off the ir cam cable -_- shouldn't have bothered to do it myself i suppose. I'll get it fixed in the new year. Gotta praise dell support on this one... Fiddling with electronics isn't for me

 

That's painful :/ Next time maybe wiggle it from side to side, gently.

I’ll be in a flight in a few hours, and I’ll work on the form for orders of the RTX 4000 and RTX 5000 tomorrow, with a final price as well. Base prices from Dell haven’t changed: S$192.06 for the RTX 4000, and S$283.55 for the RTX 5000 (both prices including taxes).

The image seems to depict a new heatsink, which part number I can’t really make out; I shall find that out soon, too.

 

Wonder what that picture was of, then. Either a strange engineering sample, or a change is brewing for the 7X50 series...

 

Please keep us updated once you finalize the order so we could order them from you. I am in for 5000 (if not available, 4000 will work too).
