Dell Precision 7540 and 7740 Owner's Thread

I would like to get a second 240W power brick for my 7740. Looking back at the quote I received when I placed my order, it says that I have a "450-AHEP", although I can't find that part no. on the power brick label at all, the brick says LA240PM180. Anyhow... On dell.com I can't find a 450-AHEP. But I can find a 450-AHHE which says it was from the 7730, and a 450-AGCX which says it was from the 7720.

I'm pretty sure they're all compatible. But... what's the difference? Unfortunately Dell doesn't even provide dimensions and weight. All other things being equal, smaller/lighter is better.

 

Enter your service tag into this website, and check your system configuration. You should be able to find the 5-character, alphanumeric part number of the 240 W AC adaptor.

The larger version also works and it is identified by "PA-9E"; it was used for at least five generations so it is available on eBay for pretty cheap.

 

I always thought that a 17" XPS-style machine would be cool. Whether or not I would be interested depends on how well they use the extra space. I would hope for a full keyboard (with number keypad, similar to 7X40), ECC memory support (which 5540 lacks), at least three NVMe slots, and Quadro 3000-level graphics... If that were the case then I would give it a hard look when it comes time to replace my M6700.

 

I'm in the process of ordering a 7740. The sales guy assures me that I can't use the same power supply as the M6700 (which I've already got 3 of) and if want spare power supplies for the 7740 I need to buy new ones....

 

I'm quite certain @Aaron44126 has done precisely that, and used old PSUs on newer machines.

 

The sales guy is clueless. You can use any Dell 240W power supply, old or new. Indeed, I regularly use my 7530 with old-style 240W power adapters without any trouble. When the 7730 launched, @Dell-Mano_G stopped by here with some details including information about the new power supplies and confirmation that the old ones still work with the new systems.

 

Yeah, I suspected they would work fine....

 

I am using a 240w PSU from an m6500 and m6800 occasionally on my 7730 - all compatible. So if you don't have to carry them, the old big ones just work.

 

Probably after more commission rather than clueless....

Do you reckon there's any risk of invalidating warranty on a new PC by using an old (in some cases 3rd party) power supply?
