Dell Precision 7540 and 7740 Owner's Thread

Our US office ordered my 7740 this week and was given 30 September as shipping date...

9980hk, RTX 4000, FHD...
8gb, 256gb SSD ... to be upgraded.

So I've read nb51's issues with 3200 DDR4, and a few members here are HyperX 2666 CL15. AIDA reports the mem speed 38k to 43k ... Does it make a real difference in real word DTP work?

I am still undecided on 4x16gb with tight timing, or just 4x32gb CL19 ...

ANY advice much appreciated!

 

When ordering I chose the "M.2 256GB PCIe NVMe Class 40 Solid State Drive" which was the cheapest option. Anybody know what this drive is? My machine won't arrive for at least a week, but I want to decide whether to order a replacement drove before the computer gets here.

 

Dell uses SSDs from multiple vendors (Toshiba, Samsung, Lite-on) so no way to know until your system arrives.

 

I noticed that Dell started offering 32GB ECC single module but I have hard time finding these modules on sale elsewhere. Could it be because it was just released and is only sold via OEMs before making it to retailers?

 

The Samsung M474A4G43MB1-CTD is the only 32 GB ECC module I could find.

 

Exactly, only samsung's official page has the info on it. Notice how 'Production status' says 'Sample' instead of 'Mass production' compared to non-ECC module. So probably they just started supplying those exclusively to OEMs and we'll have to wait couple of months till these modules hit amazon or newegg.

So this configuration is valid. Don't really know why anybody at dell wasn't able to do it.

 

My two cents’ about 4k on 17":


The best I’ve ever seen. I am working with VMs. You can place a running VM on the desktop, and still see all details.
Great colors, contrast and brightness. Also scaling system font is a big difference.
On FHD or less letters and lines don't look sharp if scaled in certain percentages.

I run full resolution, and scaling 200% or 250%, depending on my distance to the screen.

I am more than satisfied with my decision!
For me in the future time definitely a must have.
