A couple of things. (1) They make more money selling new replacement systems for notebooks that cannot be upgraded and are too expensive to repair when something breaks. In other words planned/forced obsolescence serves them well. And, (2) the companies they use to manufacture their notebooks no longer doing it. The big mainstream notebook brands do not actually make anything. They hire other companies to make things for them under contract and then put their name on them. Plus, Dell always does whatever Intel and Micro$lop tell them to do. If they say the sky is pink with red polka dots, even though it looks blue, it's pink with red polka dots. They do not do unique things that require out-of-the-box thinking or unconventional measures. Once mobile went BGA and NVIDIA stopped supporting MXM, they were also done. They just go with the flow. (I am an ex-Dell/Alienware fanboy for many years and I know this from all the years of interaction with them. Whatever their "partners" say is taken as gospel and there will be no deviation.) To be fair, pretty much all of their competitors do the same thing. It's not a "Dell problem" as much as an industry problem. There is no ingenuity, creativity, accountability or demand for excellence.

What makes Clevo and MSI different is they make what they sell, and they do not always just go with the flow like the rest. Thus, they still use MXM graphics cards in spite of the absence of support from NVIDIA. The downside is, both have proprietary form factors and the days of swappable parts are over. They are not working together on a standard like everyone used to abide by.

Mr. Fox, my question was rhetorical. My point was that Dell could use MXM cards even today if they really wanted to. Your post very well sums up the current situation.

MXM socket will add a few mm on chassis thickness. This is a big NO and NO from most OEM's. If they still wanted use MXM slots, this would also mean possible better cooling if they added in the extra cost. But as we know, Nope, cheaper the better! Shrink the chassis thickness and as we know this will automaticcly mean decreaseed cooling capacity. The laws of physics is still there. Instead they will add in power restictions in firmware/software. See the link in post #18 How Dell cripple performance (Not only Dell use such nasty solutions instead of develope proper and needed cooling)

Indeed. I love rhetorical questions. They incite thought and produce useful conversations that are enlightening to all that participate.

Yes, the obsession with thin and light notebooks is the root of all evil in our socially retarded Facebook generation.

Coincidentally, I was communicating with the CEO of a well known high performance notebook vendor today. He was asking my opinion about something and here is part of what I said.

    There's 4980HQ PGA conversions though.

You lose 2mb cache but gain Iris graphics in return, which can be a big gain in notebooks without the capability of using dedicated GPU.

That's very true. But, having to regard Iris graphics as an improvement is pretty sad. Might be something worth looking into as a cheap way to make a $350 webmail device easier to put up with.

Dell used to use a proprietary format back before the M6600. I think it was the same format used in a few E series Inspiron's as well. Maybe if we are lucky Dell would start using this format in the Alienware 17 R6 in the future.

Dells design here though is such that if your gpu died you could still replace just it and not have to buy entire new system.

Seems allot of passionate feelings about this switch from MXM GPU card, which I think I'll stay out of.

Good thing I'm now desktop based :)

I think that buying a pro laptop is a very specific thing, what you need it for and how. With intel i7 being six core now and 8 core coming along, it satisfies my workstation needs much better than it would if it stayed a lappy. At least there's the good Clevo resellers, avoid Romanian onws who can't cool it well.
