Dell Precision 5510 Owner's Lounge

The Thunderbolt dock can drive four monitors (not all at 4K), the USB-C WD15 dock which uses the same port can only drive two. Thunderbolt bandwidth is higher than a single DisplayPort. That said, we tried using the Thunderbolt dock and found it to be rather poor, it had issues all the time. Sent them back and switched to using WD15 docks instead. Dell knows that there is issues, they aren't even selling them right now.

 

first i tried 2 FHD and one 4k, then I tried 2 FHD and 1 2K.

didn't see the 7/28 and 7/29 updates...will try those before returning it!

 

Is there anything about the TB15 dock that would prevent it from working with more than one machine? I have a Precision 5510 for work, and a dock in the office. They work just fine in conjunction with each other. I liked the machine so much, I bought one to use personally. I also got a dock to use at home with external monitor and ethernet. Both machines are on latest BIOS and drivers, but for whatever reason, neither will work with the other docking station. The only thing they will do is power the machine - no ethernet, graphics, or USB will work.

 

You have to authenticate each dock with each machine before many functions will work. Normally a dialog box pops up when you first plug it in asking you if you trust the Thunderbolt device. (Been a while since I did this so I don't remember the exact language.) Anyway, you can also use the Intel Thunderbolt software (search "thunderbolt" on the start menu) to see attached devices and authenticate one.

any word on kabylake / pascal or Polaris update for 5510 ? even polaris cpus have their compute intact as opposed to gimped gamer only pascal cards.

 

The Precision series is generally refreshed about 3 months or so after new CPUs become available, so it will be a while before you see Kaby Lake. The GPUs aren't refreshed mid-generation, so you won't see Pascal until the Kaby Lake generation of Precisions launches.

 

Just got a bunch of WD15 docks for the rest of my office, and I swapped my TB15 with one of the Windows users.

He's having trouble getting it going properly, even on Windows.
The WD15 just worked with everything on the first try -- video, power, USB, ethernet -- and under Linux no less. Runs two 1920x1600 monitors, so I have no idea about whether it handles HiDPI ones. Overall, really nice.

 

Same experience here (on Windows) --- WD15 working way better than TB15.
WD15 can only drive a single 4K display at 30 Hz.

 

This is so annoying.
