    hello,
with my latitude e4300 i got external optical drive with housing. on the bottom of the housing, there are markings:
    model no: PD02S
    CN-0KM001-73901-8CN-1783-A01
    DP/N 0KM001
i thing it is it: @dell accessories OR @ebay

with dell laptop eSATA USB port or e-port replicator eSATA USB port it works fine. but does enyone know how to use the caddy with conventional esata port? and cause the cable is quite short (about 50cm) it would be nice to connect it onto usb port(s) (desktop pc case frontend)? would it be possible? does anyone has any experience or good advice?

Well, eSATA is standardize, so you could just get a longer eSATA cable. Are you having problems connecting it to other devices or are you just wondering? If you are having problems it could just be that you need to connect the drive to an eSATAp (eSATA + power leads) connector like the one on your Dell or you'd need to find a cable that splits into eSATA for data + USB for power and the device would need two ports to be connected.

    thanks for quick replay :)
    maybe my text was confusing

the caddy works great connected to dell latitude or e-port replicator eSATA/USB combo connector. but in conventional esata port it won't worka at all.
the cable bundled/included with the caddy is specific in caddy side, in other side it seems to be like other esata connectors.
i think the eSATA/USB combo port is called eSATAp and the core of the problem is also described in the wikipedia article.

so my question is, does anybody have real experience to get such caddy work in conventional eSATA or USB port (with additional adapter or something)?

Just grabbed one of these off fleabay myself, like this one....

    Amazon.com: Genuine Dell PD02S KM001 HW563 CP110 For Latitude E4200, E4300, E5400, E6400/ATG, E6500 Precision M2400, M4400, M6400, E/Port Replicator, E/Dock Docking Station External E-SATA Optical Drive Media Bay Shell With Cable and Carry Case Media

But it came with a TS-U633 burner included, like this one (but in black).....

    Amazon.com: Genuine Dell TS-U633, G558F, P53MW, Slim CD/DVD ± RW DVD±RW CD±RW DVD-RW CD-RW SATA 8x Dual Layer Burner Optical Drive Compatible Part Numbers: G558F, H866F, TS-U633, TS-U633A, P53MW: Computers & Accessories

Works like a treat on my L702x (XPS 17) Laptop :)
Got it because sometimes it is handy to have a second DVD drive fro copying stuff, and also because you can get HDD modules as well, and i think i even saw a USB 3 adapter module too. There are also battery modeules available, however i have no reason to think they will wrok with my XPS.

I also got myself a Sony/Optiarc BD-5750H Burner and swapped the combo drive i had originally, it would have been nice if my combo drive could have been made to fit the media bay, but that uses the slimmer 9.5mm drives, although initial search results do indicate that a Panasonic UJ232AB 9.5mm SATA Trayload BD-RE will fit, as will a UJ242 and an original Lattitude E series BD/DVDRW UJ-152 combo drive
