    Hi M.J.S.,

What is your experience with M4800 ?

is it working good in long hours ? like almost full day or more than 15 hrs a day.

Even I am not engineer/developer or so on. I need machine which can stand 15 hours a day without rebooting and any other physical problem.

I don’t deny this consideration should be made at this time.

My statements can be taken as my generic opinion of M4x00 workstations (i.e. computers literally built to work as computing devices) as opposed to so called business machines (which one can simplistically understand as computers designed to conduct business with).

My M4800 is up 24/7 and I typically only reboot it for Windows Update (once or twice a month).

(I think all but the most terrible cheap computers should be able to run like this though...)

More or less, I boot it up every morning, shut it off every night. We’re having a heat wave here currently, but the computer just works. But I’m only having about 30 degrees centigrade inside. ;)Does that prove anything?

If I don’t mess with drivers, the Reliability Monitor built into Windows can easily show weeks without any problems I would notice.
I’m not saying there isn’t anything ever. A week ago, the Intel HD driver briefly restarted itself (it took a second) after I woke up the computer from sleep. But such events are uncommon.
BSOD? Have I ever seen one on this machine? I honestly don’t remember.
When was the last time I needed to force-shut down the thing? A year ago, maybe? I don’t remember.
Last summer, with much older BIOS, it might have restarted itself once or twice instead of waking from sleep or something like that—but I don’t remember it very clearly.
But have I ever lost my work on this machine. I believe not.
Do I ever restart it just because Windows has become unstable? Never, unless I have been knowingly messing with something.

Was it this stable when new to market? Reportedly not. I bought it six months into the market, when most problems had been fixed. Have I ever run into any problems with it? Yes, such as when Dell released a BIOS version which just locked a computer with a certain BIOS setting. This was not specific to Precisions—Latitudes were also affected. Or there were BIOS versions with not so good keyboard de-bouncing. (Also not specific to Precision line.)

Have people ever reported weird problems with it? Yes, they have. You can peruse the owners’ thread. There have been faulty pieces, as can be expected. Does my personal experience matter statistically anyhow? I guess not. :D However, there was the time when we would discuss all kinds of things in the owners’ thread, and then the chatter died out, and now we only post now and then. Without Windows 10 upon us, there would not be much to talk about anymore.

    Hi,

    your reply is really helpful.

I have tried HP, Dell Studio and Vostro also.

Now using Dell Latitude from last two years. but it is rebooting and some time getting hot/warm also.

Any idea, when new model will come of precision ? like M4900 or 5000 ?

My wife uses a Dell Precision M6400. I think it turns 7 years old later this year. It started life with Windows Vista and now runs Windows 7. It is only just now that she is wanting a new computer. I think 6 going on 7 years is a good run. How about you?

The Precisions are good machines. My work M6600 is still running strong. I only upgraded to the M6800 since I needed a powerful CPU - the i7-4940mx. Otherwise I would still be using the M6600 (it turns 4 years old later this year).

I don't understand why your Latitude is giving out on you after only 2 years? Normally Latitudes are study tanks too. ?? I have a user here at work with a Latitude E6510. it is 4 going on 5 years old. No problems reported. She uses it daily and travels at least once a month with it. ??

My M4800 is my own, but I use it at work as well. It's often idling when I'm at another desk, but it's sitting in a metal shop 45+ hours a week and is coming up on two years with no real issues.
