    Hello forum.

I'm trying to update my Dell Latitude E6540's dedicated GPU to the latests drivers posted on guru3d.

Unfortunately it only reaches "Detecting System Hardware" and refuses to complete the install.

This is a problem that is causing quite a bit of a headache.

Can anyone provide answers on how to overcome this as the laptop has no difficultly in installing the stock drivers from the dell website.

Try uninstalling the video card through the device manager until it shows as standard windows vga adapter, reboot and then try again.

    Thanks for the help tijo.

Unfortunately that hasn't fixed the issue either.

I'm sort of at a loss then. That was how I fixed my MR HD5870 suddenly deciding not to take any new drivers back in the day. Dell isn't know for having the you must install our drivers crap either so it's just plain weird. At first, I was expecting some guru3d tweak that was preventing installation, but apparently, that isn't it.

You could always extract the driver files and point the device manager to the correct .inf file, but it is not something I have ever tried with video drivers, so I can't guarantee what'll happen.

Answer: the HD8790m in the Dell E6540 most likely has a (very slightly) different Hardware ID.

    Check your ID in:

Device Manager -> Display Adapters -> Details

Then expand the downloaded drivers somewhere (start installation, search temp directories, copy expanded drivers), and open the OEM.INF file. Try to find your Hardware ID, or one like it, in that file. I suspect that it will be slightly different. You can edit the file by changing that HardwareID, save the file, then try installation again - but do be cautious.

I've been advised to re-install Windows and do a complete driver clean up and new download.
I know from past experience this won't fix a damn thing.
I agree with the superb advice I've received from this website. I reckon Dell have changed the drivers slightly in order to install on this machine.

I'm still a little unsure on how to go about your steps Chemware.
Would you mind expanding a little?
